Supporters of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso have proposed a joint presidential ticket combining his campaign with that of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi for the 2027 general elections, saying the alliance could unite regional support and challenge the ruling party.
The proposal emerged amid early political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections, as opposition figures and supporters explore strategic coalitions to broaden national appeal.
Peter Obi was the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, while Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State and National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has maintained political relevance since the last polls.
There have been ongoing discussions across Nigeria’s political landscape about potential alliances that merge regional strengths, particularly between prominent northern and southern politicians.
Speaking in Kano, Abba Sadauki Gwale, who represented various Kwankwaso support groups, said loyalists believed the proposed joint ticket could address national challenges including insecurity and economic hardship.
He said the idea reflects a collective wish of supporters to back a coalition capable of competing effectively in the 2027 presidential race.
Gwale highlighted that Peter Obi commands significant support in southern Nigeria, while Kwankwaso’s influence remains strong in the North, especially in Kano and surrounding states. He said combining these support bases could create a nationwide political force.
The proposal noted that such an alliance could be pursued under any political platform that makes it feasible, emphasising flexibility in party affiliation if necessary to formalise the ticket.
Gwale also dismissed claims that Kwankwaso was negotiating a move to the ruling All Progressives Congress, describing such reports as misleading.
Gwale said: “If the duo gets a chance in the upcoming election, Nigeria will be a better place. We are tired of insecurity, hunger and starvation.”
He added: “We propose and fully support a joint presidential ticket, particularly with Peter Obi, in any party that can make it possible.”
The call for a joint Obi-Kwankwaso ticket underscores emerging efforts among some political constituencies in Nigeria to build cross-regional alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Such alliances reflect broader debates on how opposition forces might consolidate support against the ruling party’s candidate.
The proposal also highlights public interest in alternative leadership configurations that address widespread concerns over insecurity, cost of living pressures and governance challenges.
