ADC Says Party Does Not Belong to Any Individual Ahead of 2027 Elections

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has stressed that the party does not belong to any single person or faction, amid ongoing debates about internal influence and its role as an opposition platform leading up to the 2027 general elections.

The statement was made by the party’s interim spokesperson in response to speculation that prominent politicians are gaining control of the party.

The party’s interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, told journalists and political commentators that all stakeholders are included in party decisions and no individual has taken over its structures.

Abdullahi said the party is committed to internal democracy and a level playing field for all aspirants who wish to contest the presidential ticket.

“The party is not loyal to anybody and has not been taken over by anyone,” Abdullahi said, noting that leadership roles within the party, such as the National Organising Secretary, were filled through processes that reflect participation by members.

Abdullahi’s comments come amid wider public discourse about the ADC’s position as an opposition force in Nigeria’s political landscape. The ADC was adopted by some opposition figures as a platform to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

While figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi are linked with the coalition, the party has clarified that leadership and direction will be determined by its members collectively.

Political analysts say the ADC’s insistence on collective ownership is aimed at reducing doubts about internal control and elite dominance inside the party.

They note that the party has faced tensions over influence and the involvement of high-profile politicians. But party officials have repeatedly said these dynamics must not compromise democratic processes within the ADC.

The message from the party’s leadership underscores its stance that membership and participation are open to Nigerians who subscribe to its values, and that no single individual — regardless of status — can lay claim to owning or directing the party unilaterally.

Observers say how the ADC navigates leadership, candidate selection and internal unity will be key to its credibility and performance in the 2027 general elections.
