ADC Vows Nationwide Mobilisation Over Electoral Act Amendment Signed by Tinubu

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has said it will mobilise Nigerians nationwide in reaction to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s assent to the Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment).

The party issued its position in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary on Thursday.

President Tinubu signed the Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment) into law at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja after passage by both chambers of the National Assembly.

The amended Electoral Act replaces the 2022 Electoral Act and introduces changes to Nigeria’s electoral framework ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The legislation includes provisions on electronic transmission of election results and other procedural aspects of Nigeria’s electoral process.

The signing has attracted responses from various political parties and civil society organisations.

In a statement dated February 19, 2026, the ADC said the speed of passage and presidential assent raised questions about the transparency of the electoral process.

The party’s statement was signed by Bolaji Abdullahi, its National Publicity Secretary. The ADC said the speed with which the president approved the bill drew objections from Nigerians across the country.

According to the party, the new law introduces ambiguity and excessive discretion in the collation and transmission of election results. It said such discretion could weaken transparency in future elections.

The ADC said it plans to mobilise Nigerians toward vigilance, lawful participation, and unity in defence of constitutional rights.

The statement by the African Democratic Congress said, “With the alarmingly speedy assent to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed the death warrant on credible elections and, by so doing, set Nigeria’s democracy back by several decades.”

It added, “We will mobilise Nigerians toward vigilance, toward lawful participation, and toward unity in defence of their constitutional rights.”

The ADC’s declared intention to mobilise Nigerians contributes to the national discourse on electoral reforms introduced by the amended Electoral Act. Its position reflects opposition party reactions to the legal changes ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The amended Act’s provisions will guide the operations of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in organising elections, including updated procedures for result transmission.
