ADP Says Meeting with Atiku Focused on Strengthening Democracy for 2027

Leaders of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) have said their February 1 meeting with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in Abuja focused on areas of collaboration to strengthen democracy and sustain Nigeria’s multi-party system ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar met privately with the ADP leadership in the nation’s capital, prompting discussion about the purpose of the engagement.

The ADP is one of Nigeria’s registered political parties and has sought to engage other political stakeholders as part of preparations for the 2027 elections.

The political landscape ahead of the 2027 polls has seen opposition parties and leaders explore strategic alignments, alliances and platforms to present alternatives to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

ADP National Chairman Yabagi Sani said the meeting with Atiku was aimed at “strengthening democracy and protecting democratic pluralism.”

He said consultative engagements were being held with a range of opposition parties, political stakeholders and youth organisations.

Sani explained that the discussions were designed to ensure that opposition groups have viable platforms and mechanisms to challenge dominant political forces and sustain competitive multi-party politics in Nigeria.

Another ADP official, speaking anonymously because he was not authorised to comment publicly, said the focus was on collaboration ahead of the 2027 elections.

The official said the party was engaging leaders beyond Atiku to explore ways to build a united front capable of addressing national governance issues.

The ADP leaders noted that part of their strategy included preparing alternative platforms and options for opposition leaders to ensure continuity and resilience in the face of possible legal, logistical or technical challenges that could arise during the electoral process.

Sani said: “The meeting was largely about strengthening democracy and protecting democratic pluralism, ensuring that Nigeria’s multi-party system is sustained and that opposition parties have the stability needed to function effectively.”

The ADP’s clarification highlights efforts by opposition political parties in Nigeria to organise and explore collaborative frameworks ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Such engagements reflect wider political activity as parties seek to enhance competitiveness, expand support bases and address challenges facing democratic processes in the country.

These consultations occur at a time when other opposition formations have emerged with coalition aspirations, including the African Democratic Congress platform adopted by several political figures to challenge the APC in national polls.
