Bayelsa Assembly Confirms Peter Akpe as Deputy Governor

The Bayelsa State House of Assembly has confirmed Pastor Peter Akpe as the new Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State. The confirmation took place during a plenary session on Tuesday morning in Yenagoa.

The position of Deputy Governor became vacant following the death of Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo in December 2025. The Bayelsa State constitution requires the governor to nominate a replacement, subject to confirmation by the State House of Assembly.

Governor Douye Diri nominated Akpe to fill the vacancy, and the Bayelsa Assembly considered and approved the nomination on Tuesday.

Pastor Peter Akpe, before his confirmation, served as Chief of Staff to Governor Diri at Government House in Yenagoa.

He has held various public service roles, including in the civil service and elected office, and is an ordained pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

The Bayelsa House of Assembly, composed of lawmakers representing constituencies across the state, convened on Tuesday morning and formally approved Akpe’s appointment as Deputy Governor.

The Assembly’s official confirmation did not include a direct quoted statement in the initial report.

The confirmation of a new deputy governor is a key development in Bayelsa State’s governance following the passing of the former Deputy Governor.

The position is significant as part of the state executive council, which plays a role in advancing government programmes and administering state affairs.

Akpe’s confirmation also reflects the constitutional process for filling executive vacancies at the sub-national level in Nigeria, which involves nomination by the governor and approval by the legislative arm.
