The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced that January 15 will be officially marked as Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day across Nigeria. The directive, released in a statement by the Nigerian Armed Forces, is intended to honour the sacrifices and contributions of military personnel while promoting national unity and public awareness of the armed forces’ role in national security.
According to the statement, the observance will include a series of commemorative events such as military parades, wreath-laying ceremonies, and exhibitions highlighting the history and achievements of the Nigerian Armed Forces. The initiative is aimed at fostering public recognition of soldiers’ dedication to protecting lives, property, and the sovereignty of Nigeria.
The DHQ emphasized that the day will also serve as an opportunity to remember fallen heroes, acknowledge veterans, and celebrate active service members who continue to contribute to national development. Spokesperson of the DHQ, Brigadier-General John Olaniyi, stated, “January 15 will provide an avenue for citizens to engage with the military, appreciate their sacrifices, and reflect on the values of discipline, patriotism, and service to the nation.”
Officials highlighted that educational institutions, community organizations, and state governments are encouraged to participate in the celebrations. Special programs for students and youth groups are expected to promote awareness about the history of Nigeria’s military engagements, humanitarian interventions, and peacekeeping missions.
The declaration also comes in the wake of increasing public discourse about security challenges in various parts of the country. By formalizing a day of remembrance, the DHQ aims to strengthen civilian-military relations, encourage transparency, and foster dialogue on how citizens can contribute to national security efforts.
The Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day is expected to become an annual observance, with the Nigerian military coordinating nationwide participation and ensuring that events reflect both solemn tribute and public engagement.
Civil society representatives welcomed the announcement, noting that the day can enhance recognition of military professionalism and promote civic education on security and defence matters.
This development underscores the government and military’s commitment to honoring personnel while raising awareness of the armed forces’ role in protecting the country and its citizens.
