Ex-minister cites poverty unemployment crisis in Akwa Ibom governorship bid

A former minister has said the growing poverty unemployment crisis in Akwa Ibom State influenced his decision to join the governorship race, stating that worsening economic conditions and limited job opportunities require urgent leadership intervention. The declaration was made during consultations with political stakeholders and supporters ahead of the state’s next electoral cycle.

The poverty unemployment crisis has remained a major political and economic issue in several Nigerian states, with concerns over youth unemployment, declining household income, and rising living costs shaping public discussions ahead of future elections.

In Akwa Ibom State, political aspirants have increasingly focused on economic development, industrialisation, and employment generation as key campaign themes in response to public concerns about livelihoods and economic opportunities. The former minister, who recently declared interest in the governorship position, stated that governance must address economic realities affecting ordinary citizens, particularly young people struggling with unemployment.

Speaking during his declaration activities, the aspirant said the poverty unemployment crisis in Akwa Ibom had worsened social and economic pressures on families across the state. He maintained that his decision to enter the governorship race was motivated by the need to promote policies capable of expanding employment opportunities and stimulating local economic growth.

According to him, addressing infrastructure deficits, improving support for small businesses, and encouraging investment would be necessary to reduce unemployment levels within the state. The poverty unemployment crisis was also linked to concerns about youth migration, insecurity, and reduced economic productivity, issues he said require coordinated policy responses from government institutions.

The former minister further argued that sustainable development policies and stronger public sector accountability would be essential in improving living conditions and creating long-term economic stability. Political observers note that economic hardship and unemployment are expected to remain central issues in political campaigns ahead of the next governorship election in Akwa Ibom State.

The poverty unemployment crisis highlights broader economic challenges facing many subnational governments in Nigeria, particularly regarding job creation and inclusive growth.

Analysts say governorship contests in economically strategic states are increasingly being shaped by debates around employment, infrastructure, and poverty reduction strategies. The development also reflects growing public expectations for political leaders to present practical economic solutions capable of addressing unemployment and social welfare concerns.
