FCT Elections: NSCDC Deploys 4,000 Officers, Warns Against Firearm Misuse

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Capital Territory Command, said it has mobilised officers to provide security for the FCT Area Council elections and warned personnel against accidental firearm discharges while on duty during the electoral exercise.

The statement was made on Saturday by the NSCDC FCT Commandant, Olusola Odumosu.

Area Council elections are being held in the Federal Capital Territory on Saturday, with registered voters across the six councils casting ballots for chairmen and councillors.

Electoral security arrangements involve multiple security agencies to ensure order and compliance with electoral laws.

The NSCDC is a federal security agency charged with protecting critical national assets and supporting other agencies during national events, including elections.

Mr. Odumosu addressed officers deployed across the FCT ahead of Saturday’s vote. He emphasised the need for professionalism in the discharge of duties while monitoring and securing voters during the polls.

He specifically directed officers to conduct themselves responsibly and avoid accidental discharges of firearms while performing their election duties.

The NSCDC said it has deployed about 4,000 personnel across the territory to provide security before, during, and after the elections.

More than 1.5 million registered voters in the FCT are participating in the elections to fill 68 positions, comprising six chairmanship seats and 62 councillorship roles.

Other security measures for the elections include deployments by the Nigeria Police Force and restrictions on movement during voting hours, implemented to support a peaceful electoral process.

Addressing personnel, the NSCDC Commandant said officers must avoid accidental discharges and ensure professionalism in their duties.

The mobilisation of NSCDC officers and other security personnel underscores federal security arrangements for the FCT Area Council elections.

Such deployments are part of the broader electoral security framework aimed at supporting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the conduct of credible elections nationwide.

The activities of security agencies during this election continue as Nigeria prepares for the larger 2027 general elections, with stakeholders monitoring compliance with electoral laws and public safety protocols.
