FCT to Spend ₦10.5bn on 30km Road Across Six Councils

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has approved a ₦10.5 billion contract for the construction and rehabilitation of a 30-kilometre road that will connect multiple councils within Abuja, authorities have confirmed. The project, announced on Tuesday, January 7, 2026, is part of the territorial government’s ongoing efforts to improve transportation infrastructure and support economic activity across satellite towns and communities.

According to the FCTA Minister’s office, the planned road will span six area councils, aiming to ease traffic congestion, reduce travel times, and enhance connectivity between residential and commercial zones. The corridor is expected to benefit commuters, traders, farmers, and logistics operators who rely on efficient road networks for movement and commerce.

The FCTA indicated that the project scope includes not only resurfacing deteriorated sections of the existing road but also upgrading drainage systems, expanding carriageways where necessary, and installing safety features such as street lighting and pedestrian crossings. Construction work is slated to begin in the first quarter of 2026, with a scheduled completion timeline of 12 to 18 months, subject to weather and logistical considerations.

Officials said the contract award aligns with the FCTA’s infrastructure agenda for the year, which prioritises road networks, urban mobility, and public safety. The budgetary allocation of ₦10.5 billion reflects a combination of federal government funding and internally generated revenue earmarked for capital projects.

An FCTA spokesperson stated, “This road project will significantly improve movement for residents across councils and spur economic opportunities along the corridor. It also demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that infrastructure supports inclusive development within the Federal Capital Territory.”

Urban planners have highlighted that improved road infrastructure in Abuja and its environs is critical to accommodating a growing population, reducing transportation costs, and attracting investment. Reliable road networks are also seen as essential for linking agricultural producers to markets, facilitating emergency response services, and boosting overall quality of life for citizens.

Community leaders in the affected councils have welcomed the announcement, expressing optimism that the road project will generate employment opportunities during construction and enhance the appeal of local areas for business and residential development.

The FCTA has pledged periodic progress updates throughout the construction phase and reiterated its commitment to transparency, quality control, and timely delivery of the road project, which is expected to become a key artery for intra-territorial travel and economic activity.
