Fear Spreads in Oyo Community After Bandits’ Threat Notes Surface

Panic has spread through Ikoyi-Ile community in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State after two handwritten threat notes believed to be from suspected bandits were discovered, warning of an attack scheduled for Tuesday, January 20, 2026.

The development has prompted an active investigation by the Oyo State Police Command and intensified security measures.

Police confirmed on Saturday that the notes were found at different points of a residential structure in the town. One message, written in Yoruba and titled “Lati Odo Bandit” (From the Bandits), warned residents to prepare for the arrival of attackers on the specified date, using language interpreted as hostile and intimidating.

A second note, composed in English, similarly suggested that the writers were coming soon.

Ikoyi-Ile lies in the same local government area where five forest guards were recently killed near the Old Oyo National Park in a separate incident, heightening local anxiety over security.

In a statement, Deputy Superintendent of Police Olayinka Ayanlade, Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, confirmed the police response and stated that the individual who found the notes is being debriefed as part of ongoing investigations.

“The Command has commenced a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the origin and intention behind the messages,” Ayanlade said, adding that all leads are being pursued.

Police have significantly reinforced security operations in and around the affected community. According to the command’s statement, the Commissioner of Police, CP Femi Haruna, directed the activation of intelligence, tactical, and operational units to respond to the threat.

Measures include armed patrols, stop-and-search operations, intelligence surveillance, and strategic area domination, with officers placed on 24-hour high alert to deny any criminal elements opportunity to act.

The command also urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies, emphasising that proactive steps have been taken to safeguard lives and property while the investigation continues.

At the community level, the appearance of the notes has triggered widespread apprehension, with many residents reportedly staying indoors and increasing self-protection measures.

Local leaders have appealed for support from the state government and security forces to prevent any potential escalation of violence.

The situation in Ikoyi-Ile reflects lingering security challenges in rural parts of Oyo State, where past violent incidents have contributed to anxiety among citizens.

Authorities have urged the public to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or security post as part of ongoing efforts to enhance peace and stability in the region.
