Fire Guts Lagos Building, Kills 103-Year-Old Woman

A fire outbreak at a residential building on Bola Street, Oyingbo in Lagos State on Friday, January 16, 2026, has claimed the life of a 103-year-old woman, officials from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said. The blaze also gutted parts of the building and destroyed household items and shops.

LASEMA Permanent Secretary Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu said the agency received a distress call at 11:43 a.m. through the 767/112 emergency lines and dispatched a response team from its Onipanu base. Responders reached the scene at about 12:13 p.m. and found a residential bungalow with two attached shops fully engulfed by fire.

According to Oke-Osanyintolu, the fire started in one room and quickly spread to other parts of the building before it was contained. The exact cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Emergency teams, including the LASEMA Response Team, LASEMA Fire Unit, and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, worked together to bring the blaze under control. Other responders at the scene included officers from the Nigeria Police Force, the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, and officials from the Lagos Mainland Local Government.

The fire affected eight room-and-parlour units, one self-contained mini flat, and six shops. Several household items and goods were destroyed before the flames were subdued.

Authorities said the remains of the deceased were eventually recovered and handed over to her family. Rescue, recovery and fire suppression operations have since been completed, and no additional casualties were reported.

Next steps: Fire officials are investigating the cause of the blaze and reminded residents to adhere to fire safety measures to help prevent future incidents.
