I Was Insulted for Saying Obi Can’t Beat Atiku at Convention, Baba‑Ahmed Says

Former presidential adviser Hakeem Baba‑Ahmed has disclosed that he was subjected to insults after expressing the view that former Anambra State governor Peter Obi might struggle to defeat former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in a convention‑based primary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The comments were made during an interview on Arise Television’s The Morning Show on Thursday, January 22, 2026.

Baba‑Ahmed said he had earlier spoken about the dynamics within the ADC and the likely outcome of its presidential primary if conducted through a national convention.

“I did a programme two or three days ago, where I mentioned the fact that Peter Obi would lose 100 conventions,” he said, adding that his comments drew a flood of reactions from supporters of Obi.

He recalled that many people criticised and insulted him, questioning his assessment about the prospects of Obi in such a contest.

“You’ll be amazed at the number of people who commented and insulted me and said, ‘How do these people think Peter Obi would line up behind Atiku?’” Baba‑Ahmed said, emphasising that democratic party primaries are governed by internal rules and procedures, not external popularity or sentiment.

Baba‑Ahmed reiterated his belief that if the ADC adopts a convention system to select its presidential candidate, Atiku, with his extensive experience and long history in national party politics, would be well positioned to secure the party’s ticket.

He said this view reflects the competitive nature of internal party elections and the importance of organisational strength within such processes.

He also commented on the position of Obi, noting that the former governor’s supporters often emphasise his appeal and grassroots following but may underestimate the demands of a competitive convention.

Baba‑Ahmed suggested that Obi’s political approach might be more effective in consensus‑driven arrangements than in confrontation within a crowded field of aspirants.

Baba‑Ahmed’s remarks come amid ongoing debate within the ADC about its nomination process for the 2027 presidential election, with various members and stakeholders weighing in on the party’s strategy and choice of flagbearer.

His comments reflect broader discussions about the dynamics of Nigerian party politics and the complexities of uniting diverse political ambitions within a coalition platform.
