NLC, TUC Set Peaceful Solidarity Rally in Abuja on February 3

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have announced plans to stage a peaceful solidarity rally in Abuja on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, in support of workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) currently engaged in a labour dispute.

The announcement was made jointly by the unions on Sunday, February 1.

Workers under the FCTA, represented by the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC), began an industrial action earlier in January over unresolved welfare issues, including unpaid salaries and promotion arrears.

The strike has affected normal operations at the FCTA Secretariat and other offices in the Federal Capital Territory. The National Industrial Court subsequently ordered a suspension of the strike, a ruling that has been met with continued labour mobilisation.

The solidarity rally is aimed at reaffirming the collective support of Nigeria’s organised labour for the FCTA workers’ struggle and highlighting labour’s broader commitment to workers’ rights.

In a statement jointly signed by Benson Upah, Acting General Secretary of the NLC, and N. A. Toro, Secretary General of the TUC, the unions said the rally would be held at the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) headquarters.

They said the demonstration would be lawful and peaceful, with convergence points and timing to be communicated to union members through their affiliates.

The unions emphasised that the rally would publicly affirm that “an injury to one is an injury to all,” underscoring the principle of collective solidarity within the labour movement. They described the struggle as justifiable, legitimate and necessary, pledging to sustain support for the workers until justice is achieved.

The statement directed all affiliates and state councils to mobilise members and participate fully in the peaceful action, warning against intimidation or repression and affirming that workers would not be abandoned.

The joint statement said: “This rally is to publicly affirm that an injury to one is an injury to all, and that the Nigerian labour movement will not abandon its own.” The unions added: “This struggle is not only justifiable, legitimate and necessary, and we shall sustain it until justice is done to the workers.”

The planned rally reflects growing labour activism and solidarity in Nigeria, particularly in response to unresolved welfare and working condition issues among public sector employees.

Organised labour’s mobilisation highlights the continuing role of unions in defending workers’ rights and pressing for structural improvements in labour relations nationwide.

The Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress have reaffirmed their support for FCTA workers by calling for a peaceful solidarity rally at the FCDA in Abuja on February 3.

The planned action underscores the labour movement’s commitment to collective worker rights and resistance to challenges affecting welfare and workplace justice.
