Ogun APC Orders Party Executives in Government Roles to Step Down Immediately

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State has directed all party executives who also hold statutory government appointments to resign from those offices.

The party said the directive aligns with the APC Constitution and a previous pronouncement by Governor Dapo Abiodun.

The APC in Ogun State communicated the directive as party congresses began across the state. The congresses are political processes for filling vacancies at ward, local government, state, and national party levels.

Governor Abiodun’s earlier pronouncement on the matter emphasises compliance with internal party regulations regarding executive roles within government and party structures.

The state APC Publicity Secretary, Mr. Femi Nuberu, made the directive known in a statement on Thursday. The statement said the directive responds to the need to uphold internal party discipline and the separation of powers.

The party said individuals holding dual executive positions are inconsistent with the principles of separation of powers.

It included those holding roles such as Secretary to the Local Government, Supervisors, Special Advisers, Consultants, and Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) Secretaries.

The APC said the directive is not punitive but necessary to uphold the integrity of party structures. It also said affected individuals who submit the required resignation would retain their party executive offices at ward or zone level where those offices originated.

In the statement, the party said, “The All Progressives Congress (APC), Ogun State Chapter, wishes to issue a clear directive to all party executives holding statutory government appointments, in line with the earlier pronouncement by His Excellency, Prince Dapo Abiodun CON, and in total compliance with the provisions of our Party Constitution.”

The APC also said, “Holding dual executive positions in both government and the party structure is inconsistent with the principles of separation of powers and the internal discipline enshrined in the APC Constitution.”

The APC’s directive in Ogun State reflects internal party governance practices and compliance with party rules. It highlights expectations for separation between statutory government roles and party executive positions.

The development may have implications for party executives holding dual roles ahead of political activities such as congresses and elections.
