Rivers Governor Fubara Fires Commissioners, Assembly Awaits New List

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has relieved all serving commissioners of their appointments and forwarded a request for a new list of commissioner‑nominees to the Rivers State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation, the state government said on Monday.

Under the Constitution, state governors appoint commissioners to serve in the State Executive Council, with nominees requiring confirmation by the State House of Assembly. Changes to commissioner appointments are part of state executive prerogatives.

Governor Fubara’s decision comes less than two years into his tenure as governor, following his assumption of office in May 2023. The current action affects the leadership of ministries across Rivers State.

A statement issued by the governor’s Special Assistant on Media, Olusola Aransi, said all commissioner appointments have been terminated with immediate effect. The statement did not list individual names of the commissioners affected.

The governor also forwarded a list of new nominees to the Rivers State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation. The House is expected to consider the new list in the coming days.

The state Assembly’s Deputy Speaker confirmed receipt of the governor’s communication and said members would schedule the screening of nominees according to the Assembly’s calendar.

The governor’s media aide said: “His Excellency, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has relieved all serving Commissioners of their appointments with immediate effect. The Governor has also forwarded a list of new nominees to the Rivers State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation.”

Changes in the composition of state executive councils are part of governance processes in Nigeria’s federating units as governors review administrative appointments.

The Rivers State action occurs amid broader political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections, though the statement from the governor’s office did not link the move to electoral timelines.
