Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas has said he did not collect any money in relation to his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Kefas said on Tuesday in Abuja.
Kefas was elected governor of Taraba State in the 2023 general elections on the platform of the PDP. In December 2025, he announced his defection to the APC, citing differences with the leadership of the PDP at both the state and national levels.
The move followed similar defections by other governors and senior legislators ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Addressing questions about his defection, Kefas said reports alleging that he received money to facilitate his move from the PDP to the APC were untrue.
He said his decision was based on his personal assessment of political developments and not influenced by any financial inducement.
Kefas spoke during a media briefing in Abuja, where he clarified his position and emphasised that his political decisions were made without monetary influence.
He acknowledged that political transitions are often accompanied by public scrutiny and varying accounts in the media.
Kefas said: “I want to make it categorically clear that I did not collect any money to defect to the APC. My decision was made in the interest of the people of Taraba State and not based on any financial inducement.”
Kefas’s statement reflects ongoing public interest and scrutiny over political defections by elected officials ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Clarifications from public figures on the motivations behind party transitions are part of broader discussions on political accountability and party loyalty in Nigeria’s multiparty system.
