Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has said supporters of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Rivers State do not need a governor’s backing to mobilise for the president’s 2027 re‑election bid, speaking at an event in Port Harcourt on Saturday.
Wike made the comments during the commissioning of the Rivers State Renewed Hope Ambassadors headquarters, an initiative aimed at coordinating grassroots political support in the state.
The event featured office facilities, a situation room, a radio station and operational vehicles for the organisation.
Rivers State has been a focal point of political activity in the South‑South region, with various groups and leaders publicly signalling support for President Tinubu’s potential 2027 re‑election campaign.
At the event, Wike commended the coordinator of the Rivers State Renewed Hope Ambassadors, Ambassador Desmond Akawor, for what he described as effective grassroots mobilisation efforts in the state.
He said the facilities and organisational structure already put in place showed the state’s readiness to support Tinubu’s political future.
Wike emphasised that the mobilisation did not hinge on the presence of a sitting governor, noting that local leaders and party officials were already active in rallying support.
He cited the state’s senators, members of the assembly, local government chairmen, and party leaders from both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as evidence of this internal support network.
The minister also drew on the example of the 2023 general elections, saying Rivers State showed its capacity to decide its political direction without external pressure.
Wike said: “We don’t need to have a governor to mobilise for Mr President, we have all it takes to be on our own.
We have senators, assembly people, council chairman, National Assembly members, party chairmen of APC and PDP, we have mobilised ourselves to make commitment.”
He added: “In 2023, we came out without anybody pressuring us, without anybody influencing us, we took a decision, to the glory of God that decision is what we are enjoying today.”
Wike’s remarks reflect ongoing organisation among political supporters in Rivers State as the nation heads toward the 2027 general elections.
His focus on grassroots mobilisation underscores efforts by local political structures to shape election outcomes independently of state executive influence.
The declaration also highlights the internal dynamics of political support in Rivers State, where alliances between different party figures and movements are seen as crucial to national election campaigns.
