The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has thrown its weight behind the G-100 process aimed at building a united opposition platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party said an opposition alliance could provide Nigerians with an alternative government capable of addressing worsening poverty, insecurity and other challenges confronting the country.
The endorsement was announced by the PDP Interim National Working Committee following the party’s participation in the maiden G-100 meeting held on August 31, 2026.
PDP Interim National Working Committee Chairman, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, said the party’s involvement was based on assurances that the process would be transparent, inclusive and guided by objective considerations.
“Our participation is anchored on the promise that the process will be hinged on the philosophical underpinnings of transparency, equality, data-driven decisions and egalitarianism,” Turaki said.
According to him, the credibility of the process would determine whether the opposition could produce leadership capable of responding effectively to the country’s challenges.
He said Nigerians needed a political alternative that could confront the rising cost of living and growing insecurity.
“Any result birthed by a process midwifed by these virtues will certainly offer Nigerians a credible leadership capable of alleviating the skyrocketing poverty and rising insecurity in the country,” he said.
The party said its decision to support the G-100 initiative was consistent with its earlier position on working with political parties and organisations seeking an alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
The PDP has maintained that opposition forces would need greater cooperation if they are to mount a serious challenge to the APC in 2027.
Its participation in the August 31 meeting was therefore described as another indication of its willingness to contribute to efforts aimed at creating a broader political platform.
PDP Interim National Working Committee National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, said the party would play its part in building a platform capable of defeating the incumbent and rebuilding the country.
He said the opposition alliance process represented an opportunity for political forces outside the PDP to work together around shared national objectives.
Ememobong added that the party remained prepared to collaborate with like-minded groups as discussions over a common platform continue.
The development comes as opposition parties and political actors intensify consultations over the possibility of presenting a common challenge to the APC in the 2027 presidential election.
The G-100 process is expected to provide a framework through which participating political forces can negotiate and collectively consider the difficult questions surrounding opposition cooperation.
For the PDP, however, the success of such an arrangement would depend heavily on the integrity of the process used to create it.
Turaki’s comments suggest that the party is prepared to participate provided the emerging structure reflects transparency, equality and evidence-based decision-making.
With economic hardship and insecurity remaining major concerns for voters, the PDP believes a credible political alternative could offer Nigerians a different direction ahead of the 2027 elections.
The party’s endorsement therefore marks another significant step in the search for an opposition alliance capable of challenging the APC and presenting a united alternative to Nigerian voters.
