The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has dismissed as fake and unauthorized several candidate lists currently circulating on social media ahead of elections in Imo, Abia, Anambra and other affected states.
The party said the circulating documents did not originate from its national headquarters and warned members and supporters against treating them as authentic. The clarification comes amid growing speculation over the identities of candidates expected to contest under the party’s platform in upcoming elections.
In a statement issued by the National Secretary of the NDC, Barrister Ikenna Enekweizu, the party said the NDC candidate lists being shared across various online platforms were fabricated and should be ignored.
According to the statement, neither the national leadership nor any authorized organ of the party approved the documents currently making the rounds on social media. The party stressed that members in Imo, Abia, Anambra and other affected states should rely only on official communications released through recognized party channels.
The NDC disclosed that it had already completed the process of forwarding its authentic candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) through channels prescribed by the Electoral Act.
Party officials noted that the genuine NDC candidate lists had been submitted in accordance with all legal and procedural requirements, adding that the names of candidates officially filed with the electoral commission remain the only valid records recognized by the party. The statement emphasized that any alternative lists circulating in public spaces lack legitimacy and should not be associated with the party.
The party revealed that it has commenced efforts to trace the source of the unauthorized documents. According to the NDC, the circulation of the fake lists appears to be a deliberate attempt to create confusion, undermine party cohesion and distract members from ongoing preparations for future elections. Party leaders described the publication of the documents as the handiwork of individuals seeking to cause internal disruption and spread misinformation among supporters.
While addressing concerns raised by members, the party leadership reassured stakeholders that it remains focused on strengthening its structures nationwide.
The NDC said it would not allow misinformation campaigns surrounding the NDC candidate lists to derail its broader political objectives. The party reiterated its commitment to building a strong political platform capable of offering Nigerians an alternative vision for governance, while calling on members to remain united and vigilant against attempts to create division within its ranks.
With questions continuing to surround candidate selections in several states, the NDC has moved to clarify its position by rejecting the circulating lists and reaffirming that only names officially submitted to INEC should be regarded as authentic. The party says investigations into the origin of the fake documents are ongoing as it seeks to protect the integrity of its electoral processes.
