President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has honoured Chief Bisi Akande, former Governor of Osun State and pioneer national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the elder statesman marks his 87th birthday.
Tinubu described Akande as a mentor, ally and pillar of democracy, recognising his long service to the nation and the progressive movement.
In a celebratory message issued on Friday, January 16, 2026, the president praised Akande for his leadership, wisdom and commitment to democratic values.
Tinubu said Akande’s role in Nigeria’s political evolution and his support for the APC helped shape the party’s direction and success.
Tinubu highlighted Akande’s contributions to the growth of democratic institutions and governance in Nigeria.
He noted that Akande’s leadership as Osun State governor from 1999 to 2003, and later as interim APC chairman, laid important foundations for democratic progress and party unity.
“We must thank Baba for his leadership, industry, hard work, wisdom and labour of love for our party and country,” Tinubu said in the message, affirming Akande’s influence on his own political journey and national governance agenda.
The president said Akande’s consistent belief in values that strengthen the nation has been a guiding force in public life.
Tinubu also acknowledged Akande’s support for the Renewed Hope Agenda, the current administration’s policy framework. He said the elder statesman’s counsel and encouragement were valuable assets in advancing national development and political reforms.
Akande, born on January 16, 1939, has had a long career in public service. Before serving as governor and APC chairman, he worked in roles including deputy governor of Oyo State and public service positions that reflected his commitment to national development.
Political figures and groups have also paid tribute to Akande on his birthday. The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, described Akande as a towering figure in Nigeria’s democratic journey whose leadership and integrity continue to inspire leaders and citizens. He prayed for Akande’s good health and strength as he marks the milestone.
Party members and democracy advocates across the country joined the celebrations, recognising Akande’s role in shaping progressive politics and national dialogue.
Many said his life of service and principled leadership remains a reference point for emerging leaders.
Tinubu’s tribute underscores Akande’s long‑standing influence in Nigerian politics and his role as a mentor to generations of public servants and party leaders.
As Akande celebrates his 87th birthday, supporters and leaders reaffirm his place as a respected elder statesman in the nation’s democratic history.
