Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has raised fresh concerns over an unexplained payment made into his private bank account, with his camp questioning both the identity of the sender and how confidential banking details were obtained. The transaction reportedly carried the description “Contribution Electioneering Campaign,” despite Atiku and his political organisation maintaining that they neither requested nor authorised the payment.
Atiku’s spokesman, Phrank Shaibu, disclosed that the former Vice President had no prior knowledge of the individual or entity responsible for the transaction. According to Shaibu, neither Atiku nor his campaign solicited, approved or was aware of the payment before it appeared in the account.
The development has raised concerns within Atiku’s camp that an unsolicited financial transaction could potentially create an unexplained financial association between the former Vice President and people or activities with which he has no connection. There is currently no evidence indicating that the money originated from a terrorist organisation, drug traffickers or any other criminal group.
However, Atiku’s camp is concerned about the potential consequences if the source and purpose of the payment remain unclear. An unexplained transaction, they argue, could subsequently generate questions about the recipient’s relationship with the sender or create a financial trail that may be interpreted in ways unrelated to the recipient.
One of the central questions surrounding the incident is how the sender obtained Atiku’s bank account information. His spokesman said the affected account is a strictly private account whose details are not publicly available. Shaibu therefore questioned how unknown individuals were able to obtain confidential banking information belonging to a former Vice President and prominent political figure.
Atiku’s camp is also examining the possibility that the information could have been accessed by someone with privileged access to sensitive financial data. The concern has consequently shifted beyond the unexpected payment itself to the security of private banking information.
The bank involved, described as one of Nigeria’s top five financial institutions, has reportedly commenced an investigation into the transaction.
The institution was expected to provide feedback on its findings as it seeks to establish the origin of the payment and determine how the transaction was initiated. Further checks reportedly indicated that the funds originated from an OPay account, potentially providing investigators with another avenue for tracing the transaction.
However, identifying the immediate account from which the money was transferred may not necessarily establish the identity of the person ultimately responsible for initiating or funding the transaction. The investigation is therefore expected to examine the wider transaction trail and circumstances surrounding the payment.
The former Vice President has also framed the incident as a broader question of financial privacy and personal security. His camp argued that if confidential banking information belonging to a former Vice President could be obtained and used without his knowledge, similar vulnerabilities could potentially affect other Nigerians.
Atiku warned that unauthorised access to sensitive financial information could expose individuals to criminals, including fraudsters, kidnappers, bandits and other security threats. The concern is particularly significant because of his prominence in opposition politics and his expected involvement in the political environment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to Atiku’s spokesman, the matter has been brought to the attention of relevant security agencies.
His camp wants investigators to establish who authorised the payment, why it was described as an electioneering campaign contribution and how the sender obtained details of a private bank account. The circumstances surrounding the transaction have also heightened concerns within his political camp about the possibility of suspicious activities targeting prominent political figures ahead of the next general election.
For now, Atiku’s position remains that the unexplained payment should not be treated as an unexpected financial benefit. Instead, the former Vice President’s camp considers it a potential security and political red flag until the source, purpose and circumstances surrounding the transaction are conclusively established.
