The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured all 13 chairmanship and 171 councillorship seats contested in the Ebonyi LG election, according to results announced by the state electoral commission. The results were declared on Sunday by the Chairman of the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC), Patrick Enyi, at the commission’s office on Onwe Road, Abakaliki.
Among the chairmanship candidates declared elected was Osborn Umahi, son of the Minister of Works, David Umahi. He won the chairmanship election in Ohaozara Local Government Area. Other candidates declared winners included Peace Agwu for Ishielu, Paul Ituma for Ohaukwu, Friday Nwuhuo for Ezza North and Chinedu Mkpuma for Ezza South.
Chidi Nwode was declared winner in Ikwo, while Timothy Nwachi won in Afikpo. Ikechukwu Ogbofia emerged chairman-elect for Onicha, with Michael Kalu Anyim winning in Ivo. Simeon Onuoha was declared winner in Edda, Helen Aduga in Izzi, Chidiebere Alo in Abakaliki and Chibueze Odigwe in Ebonyi Local Government Area.
Enyi described the election as peaceful, free and fair, noting that candidates from other political parties also participated in the exercise.
He commended voters for turning out to exercise their constitutional rights and acknowledged the contribution of security agencies to the conduct of the election. The commission’s declaration gives the APC control of all 13 local government chairmanship positions and the 171 councillorship seats contested across the state.
Speaking after his declaration, Umahi commended EBSIEC for what he described as the transparent and peaceful conduct of the election.
The Ohaozara chairman-elect pledged to focus on rural development, youth empowerment and agricultural transformation during his tenure. His proposed priorities come against the backdrop of agriculture’s importance to the livelihoods of communities across Ebonyi, where local government administrations play a role in supporting rural infrastructure and economic activities.
APC Chairman in Ebonyi State, Stanley Okoro Emegha, described the party’s performance as evidence of its political strength in the state. Emegha said the result demonstrated what he called growing acceptance of the APC among Ebonyi residents.
He also expressed confidence that the party would build on the local government election result ahead of the 2027 general elections. The outcome places the APC in control of all elected local government councils in Ebonyi State, following the conclusion of the state-level local government polls.
