The MMIA fire scare at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, has been traced to the activation of the terminal’s fire suppression system, with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirming that no actual fire occurred. The authority also announced that normal flight and passenger operations have fully resumed while investigations continue to determine what triggered the incident.

In an update issued after the incident, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr. Henry Agbebire, explained that preliminary findings showed the smoke seen within the terminal was caused by the discharge of the FM-200 fire suppression system rather than an outbreak of fire. According to him, investigators are currently working to establish why the automated suppression system was activated.

FAAN stated that activities at Terminal 2 have returned to normal following safety assessments carried out after the incident. The authority had earlier confirmed that there were no casualties despite initial reports suggesting a fire had broken out at the airport terminal.

Agbebire said a detailed investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the system’s activation and prevent similar occurrences in the future. He noted that while there was no fire, the authority considers the incident important enough to warrant a comprehensive review of the terminal’s safety systems.

Following the MMIA fire scare, FAAN thanked passengers, airlines, airport users and other stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation during the incident. The authority reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and security across Nigeria’s airports, assuring the travelling public that all necessary measures are being taken as the investigation progresses.
