The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi (MOAUM) branch, has announced the MOAUM strike suspension following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Benue State Government and the university management. The industrial action, which lasted 52 days, was called off after the three parties reached a negotiated agreement aimed at resolving the issues that triggered the strike.
Academic activities at the university had been disrupted since June 1, 2026, when lecturers embarked on strike over outstanding salary-related entitlements, promotion arrears and other welfare concerns.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, ASUU-MOAUM Chairman, Dr. Ako Sule, said the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) approved the decision to suspend the strike after successful negotiations involving the union, the Benue State Government and the university administration. According to Sule, the suspension took immediate effect, reflecting the commitment of all parties to resolving the dispute through dialogue and mutual understanding.
The ASUU chairman said the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding marked an important step toward restoring industrial peace within the institution.
He, however, stressed that the union expects both the state government and the university management to fully implement every provision contained in the agreement. Sule noted that lasting industrial harmony can only be achieved when agreements reached through collective bargaining are honoured promptly and in good faith.
Following the MOAUM strike suspension, ASUU directed all academic staff of the university to return to work immediately and continue carrying out their teaching, research and other academic responsibilities.
The union also expressed appreciation to its members for their commitment throughout the industrial action and thanked students, parents and members of the public for their patience and understanding during the disruption. ASUU reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare of its members while continuing to promote the growth and development of Moses Orshio Adasu University through constructive engagement with relevant stakeholders.
