PDP Questions Bayelsa Stadium Project, Urges Focus on Jobs and Food Security

The Bayelsa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticised the proposed Bayelsa stadium project, calling on Governor Douye Diri’s administration to channel public resources towards tackling unemployment, hunger and poverty instead of embarking on what it described as a costly infrastructure venture.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Ikaebimo Mark, the opposition stressed that while it supports infrastructure development, government investments should prioritise projects capable of creating jobs, boosting businesses and improving the welfare of residents.

According to the party, the proposed 25,000-capacity Bayelsa stadium project, estimated to cost more than N100 billion, has sparked legitimate concerns about government priorities and the prudent use of public funds.

The PDP argued that residents deserve clear explanations regarding the project’s economic value, long-term sustainability, expected returns and the number of permanent jobs and business opportunities it would generate. The party maintained that investments should directly address the economic challenges confronting Bayelsans rather than focus on projects with uncertain economic impact.

The opposition also accused the Diri-led All Progressives Congress (APC) administration of responding to criticism with political attacks instead of addressing pressing issues affecting residents.

According to the statement, rising food prices, unemployment, struggling businesses and declining purchasing power require practical solutions rather than political exchanges. The PDP insisted that Bayelsans deserve answers on how the government intends to improve livelihoods and reduce poverty across the state.

The party further questioned why the Samson Siasia Stadium had not evolved into a thriving centre for sports development and economic activities despite years of government oversight. It argued that the recent decision to upgrade the facility amounted to an acknowledgment that the stadium had been neglected during the current administration.

Beyond the Bayelsa stadium project, the PDP criticised the condition of public transportation and water supply, alleging that many residents still depend largely on commercial tricycles while Yenagoa lacks a functional public water system. The party maintained that a state heavily reliant on monthly federal allocations should focus on programmes that directly improve living conditions.

It called on the state government to implement a comprehensive economic recovery plan centred on wealth creation, food security, industrialisation, investment attraction and measurable employment targets, while reaffirming its commitment to supporting policies that benefit Bayelsans and holding the government accountable.
