The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) has declared that it does not support a PFN Muslim-Muslim ticket for elective public office, insisting that Nigeria’s religious and ethnic diversity should be reflected in its political leadership ahead of the 2027 general elections. The position was announced following a meeting of the fellowship’s National Executive Council (NEC), where members also raised concerns over proposals they said could restrict Christian preaching.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Sylvanus Ukafia, the Christian body reaffirmed its commitment to Nigeria’s unity, peace and democratic development. The fellowship stated that inclusive governance remains essential for promoting national cohesion, mutual trust and a sense of belonging among citizens.
According to the PFN, Nigeria’s multi-religious and multi-ethnic character should be adequately reflected in the country’s leadership structure. The remarks come after the All Progressives Congress (APC) adopted President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, both Muslims, as its presidential ticket for the 2027 election.
Beyond its position on the PFN Muslim-Muslim ticket, the fellowship also opposed any proposed legislation or policy aimed at banning or unduly restricting Christian preaching.
It argued that such measures would conflict with constitutional provisions guaranteeing freedom of religion, expression, conscience and peaceful assembly. While acknowledging the government’s responsibility to maintain public order, the PFN maintained that regulations should not become instruments for suppressing lawful religious activities or infringing on fundamental rights.
The fellowship called on all arms and levels of government to uphold constitutional protections and ensure that no legislation discriminates against any religious group. It also urged Christians across the country to remain peaceful, law-abiding and steadfast while exercising their constitutional rights responsibly. According to the PFN, believers should continue to demonstrate the values of Christianity without resorting to violence or provocation.
The fellowship further encouraged sustained dialogue among government officials, religious leaders and civil society organisations on issues capable of affecting national unity. It described Nigeria’s diversity as a national strength that should be preserved rather than exploited for division. The PFN reiterated its commitment to praying for the nation while working with relevant stakeholders to promote a peaceful, just and prosperous Nigeria where every citizen enjoys equal protection under the law.
