Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced the emergence of his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, and Princess Damilola Sonayon-James as the Lagos APC ticket for the forthcoming governorship election in the state.
The announcement was made in a post shared on Sanwo-Olu’s verified X account on Thursday. The governor described the pair as a leadership combination positioned to sustain governance continuity and drive development in Lagos State. The unveiling comes as political preparations intensify ahead of the next governorship election, with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) finalising its candidates in the state.
Governor Sanwo-Olu stated that the selection of the duo reflects the administration’s commitment to continuity, competence, and inclusive leadership. “The true test of sustainable governance is the ability to pass the baton to proven hands, guided by minds that see the future clearly,” he said.
He added that the Lagos APC ticket represents “the strength, diversity, and future” of the state. Sanwo-Olu praised Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, describing him as a dependable partner in governance and a committed public servant.
“Dr. Obafemi Hamzat has proven himself to be a dedicated public servant, a dependable partner in governance and a steadfast advocate for progress,” the governor stated. He also highlighted the contributions of Princess Damilola Sonayon-James, noting her experience in sustainability and grassroots development.
“Joining him as his running mate is Princess Damilola Sonayon-James, a respected leader, sustainability professional, and grassroots champion whose commitment to community development and youth empowerment reflects the aspirations of many Lagosians,” he said. The governor added that both candidates possess the competence and energy required to consolidate existing achievements under the current administration.
“Together, they bring the experience, competence, and energy needed to build on our achievements and move Lagos forward,” he said. Sanwo-Olu also called on party members, stakeholders, and residents to support the Lagos APC ticket, urging unity ahead of the election.
“I invite party faithful, stakeholders, and all Lagosians to support this team as we continue our shared mission of building a Greater Lagos,” he stated.
Hamzat had earlier emerged as the APC candidate at a primary election held at the party secretariat in Ogba on May 21. He secured 657,917 votes out of 657,974 accredited votes cast, while his challenger, Lanre Jim-Kamal, received one vote.
With the unveiling of the Lagos APC ticket, the ruling party in Lagos has formally positioned its governorship team ahead of the forthcoming election. The development signals the start of intensified political mobilisation within the state as preparations continue toward the polls.
