The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed reports linking the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Kemi Nandap, to its ongoing visa fraud probe, stating that she is not under investigation. The anti-graft agency clarified that its investigation is directed at certain immigration officers accused of alleged visa-related fraud, with additional prosecutions expected as inquiries continue.
In a statement issued by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the commission described media reports suggesting that the Immigration Comptroller-General was being investigated as false and misleading. According to the EFCC, there is no case involving Nandap. The commission stressed that the ongoing visa fraud probe does not in any way concern the head of the Nigeria Immigration Service.
The EFCC disclosed that criminal proceedings have already commenced against some immigration officers over allegations of visa fraud. According to the agency, the affected officers are currently facing prosecution before the Federal High Court in connection with the alleged offences. The commission noted that these cases form part of its broader efforts to address fraudulent practices within the immigration system.
Beyond the cases already before the court, the EFCC revealed that investigations are still ongoing and could lead to additional prosecutions. The commission said more officers of the Nigeria Immigration Service may be arraigned if evidence emerging from the investigation supports further criminal charges. It maintained that the scope of the investigation remains limited to officers suspected of participating in the alleged fraudulent activities.
The anti-graft agency also called on media organisations to verify information with the commission before publishing reports relating to its investigations. It said seeking official clarification would help prevent misinformation and ensure accurate reporting of ongoing cases. The EFCC reiterated that while the visa fraud probe remains active, Comptroller-General Kemi Nandap is not a subject of the investigation, urging the public to disregard reports suggesting otherwise.
