Bauchi Governor Reportedly Negotiating Defection to APC, PDP Faces Internal Strains

The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, has reportedly engaged in discussions about a possible defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), multiple sources familiar with the matter said over the weekend.

According to reports cited on Arise Television, negotiations were ongoing with leadership of the APC, and Mohammed had met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and senior party members to signal his interest in joining the ruling party.

The discussions were described as ongoing as of Saturday night, with terms still being finalised.

The reports did not indicate that any formal announcement or official confirmation of a completed defection had been issued by either the Bauchi State Government, the APC, or the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as of the latest update.

Bala Mohammed was elected governor of Bauchi State in 2019 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party and currently serves as chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum.

The PDP is one of Nigeria’s major political parties and traditionally serves as the principal opposition at the federal level.

Internal legal disputes and party reorganisation have been ongoing within the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Political transitions and defections by elected officials are a recurring feature of Nigeria’s multi‑party system.

Formal changes in party affiliation are typically communicated through official notices to party authorities and, in some cases, declarations during public events or press statements.

Sources cited in reports indicated that discussions about Governor Mohammed’s potential defection were active and involved talks with APC leadership.

The governor is also the chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, a role held while serving as a PDP member.

No official confirmation or documentation regarding the completion of any defection had been released by either party at the time of reporting.

Reports of a potential defection by a serving governor may affect political dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections by influencing party strength and cohesion.

Changes in the political affiliations of high‑profile officeholders can also shift legislative and executive alignments at both state and national levels.
