ADC Emerges Main Opposition in Senate After Wave of Defections

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has emerged as the main opposition party in Nigeria’s Senate following a wave of defections by several lawmakers from other political parties.

The development occurred during a Senate plenary session where letters of defection were read by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

According to reports from the Senate chamber in Abuja, the day’s proceedings took a dramatic turn when the presiding officer began announcing the letters from senators who had decided to leave their previous political parties and join the ADC.

The defections involved nine serving senators in the 10th Senate who announced their movement to the ADC during the plenary session.

The development significantly altered the political balance within the upper chamber of the National Assembly.

Among those who defected were lawmakers who previously belonged to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other political parties represented in the Senate.

Their letters were formally read during proceedings in line with parliamentary practice for announcing party defections.

The move reduced the number of PDP senators in the chamber while increasing the representation of the ADC, allowing the party to assume the position of the largest opposition bloc in the Senate.

Reports indicate that senators who moved to the ADC included lawmakers previously elected under different party platforms across several states.

The defections were formally communicated through written notices addressed to the Senate leadership and read during plenary by the Senate President.

The shift also affected the numerical composition of parties within the chamber. Following the defections, the ADC recorded a larger number of senators than the PDP, which had previously held the position of the main opposition party in the Senate.

Changes in party alignment within the Senate can influence committee assignments, leadership structures, and the organisation of opposition activities in the National Assembly.

The emergence of the ADC as the main opposition bloc reflects ongoing political realignments within Nigeria’s multiparty system.

Political analysts note that defections and party realignments are common in the Nigerian legislature, particularly during periods of internal party disputes or shifting political alliances.
