Lagos sanitation modalities have been clarified by the Lagos State Government as it announced enforcement measures and compliance expectations ahead of the resumption of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise scheduled for April 25 across the state.
The monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Lagos State is a structured public hygiene programme designed to improve environmental cleanliness, waste management, and flood prevention. It forms part of the state’s broader urban management strategy aimed at addressing sanitation challenges in one of Africa’s most densely populated cities. The exercise was previously suspended following policy reviews but has since been reintroduced to strengthen environmental discipline and promote collective responsibility among residents, businesses, and institutions.
The government confirmed that the sanitation exercise will hold from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on April 25, during which residents are expected to clean their surroundings and ensure proper waste disposal.
Under the Lagos sanitation modalities, enforcement agencies will monitor compliance across the state, while residents are required to clear drainages, sweep their environment, and properly bag waste for collection. The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) reiterated that sanitation is a shared civic responsibility and urged residents to actively participate in maintaining cleanliness across communities.
Authorities warned that defaulters who fail to comply with the sanitation directives may face sanctions under existing environmental laws of the state. The government stressed that enforcement would be carried out in line with regulatory provisions to ensure adherence. Officials also clarified that the exercise does not impose a restriction of movement but is focused strictly on environmental clean-up activities within the designated time frame.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, stated that the programme is part of ongoing efforts to improve environmental resilience in Lagos, particularly in reducing flooding risks and promoting sustainable waste management practices. Residents were further encouraged to take ownership of their environment by ensuring consistent cleanliness beyond the monthly exercise period.
