Jigawa Pension Payment: State Disburses N1.39bn to 560 Retirees, Families

The Jigawa State and Local Governments Contributory Pension Scheme Board has begun the disbursement of Jigawa pension payment worth N1.389 billion to 560 retirees and the families of deceased civil servants across the state. The payment covers retirement gratuities, death benefits and outstanding pension balances for beneficiaries drawn from the state civil service, local government councils and local education authorities.

Speaking during the distribution exercise at the Pension House in Dutse, the Executive Secretary of the pension scheme, Bilyaminu Aminu, disclosed that a total of N1,389,857,763.37 had been approved for payment. He explained that the exercise benefits workers who retired voluntarily, reached the mandatory retirement age or died while still in active service. According to him, 453 retired civil servants will receive N1,101,443,426.68 as part of the Jigawa pension payment initiative.

Aminu further stated that N261,855,040.41 has been allocated to 90 next of kin of civil servants who died while serving the state. He added that another N26,559,296.28 would be paid to the families of 17 pensioners who passed away before completing five years after retirement. The outstanding balance of their pension entitlements, he noted, would now be released to their designated beneficiaries.

The Executive Secretary assured beneficiaries that the contributory pension scheme remains up to date with both retirement benefits and monthly pension payments. He said retired civil servants across all 27 local government areas continue to receive their monthly pensions without interruption. Aminu credited the steady payment record to the commitment of Governor Umar Namadi, whom he praised for prioritising the welfare of pensioners through ongoing reforms.

Also speaking, the State Accountant General, Abdullahi Shehu, disclosed that the Jigawa State Government has injected more than N9 billion into the contributory pension scheme since 2023. According to him, the investment has strengthened the financial stability of the scheme and enhanced confidence among serving workers approaching retirement.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on the Contributory Pension Scheme, Idris Aminu, also described the state’s pension programme as one of the most efficient in Nigeria, citing its record of timely payments and commitment to ensuring retirees enjoy financial security after service.

Some beneficiaries welcomed the disbursement, describing it as timely and impactful. A retired local government worker, Yusuf Isiya, said the payment would enable him to clear outstanding debts and establish a small business, while Binta Sani, widow of a deceased teacher, expressed gratitude, noting that the funds would help support her children’s welfare and meet essential household needs.
