APC Till 2031: Why Yari’s Remark Sparked Opposition Reactions Ahead of 2027

The declaration that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) could remain in power beyond 2031 has sparked fresh political debate, with opposition parties moving swiftly to challenge what they see as an attempt to project long-term dominance ahead of the 2027 elections.

The controversy followed comments by Senator Abdul’Aziz Yari, Director-General of President Bola Tinubu’s Presidential Campaign Council, shortly after his unveiling in Abuja.

While campaign officials routinely express confidence in electoral victories, Yari’s projection extended beyond President Tinubu’s possible second term, placing the APC on a longer political trajectory.

Political observers say the statement shifted attention from the 2027 election itself to a broader conversation about power, influence and political perception.

Analysts argue that the significance of the APC till 2031 statement lies not in Yari’s confidence about Tinubu’s re-election bid, but in the message it sends to political actors.

In Nigerian politics, perceptions of strength often influence political decisions long before voters head to the polls.

A party viewed as dominant can attract allies, financiers and potential defectors, while parties perceived as struggling may lose momentum even before elections are conducted.

By suggesting that APC could remain in power beyond 2031, Yari projected an image of long-term political stability and control for the ruling party.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) quickly dismissed the suggestion that the ruling party had already secured future electoral victories.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, said Yari should focus on delivering the assignment given to him rather than making projections beyond the next election.

He insisted that the opposition had not conceded the 2027 election and rejected any suggestion that APC’s continued control of power was inevitable.

According to him, political outcomes remain in the hands of voters, not campaign predictions.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) responded even more forcefully.

ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, accused Yari of attempting to justify his new role within the campaign structure.

He also questioned the political strength of the ruling party, arguing that confidence alone could not guarantee future electoral victories.

ADC National Chairman, Senator David Mark, through his media aide, described Yari’s projection as wishful thinking and challenged the ruling party to convince Nigerians with its record and policies.

According to Mark, electoral success ultimately depends on the ability of political parties to communicate effectively with voters and address their concerns.

Yari’s confidence comes amid the unveiling of a powerful campaign structure by the ruling party.

President Tinubu serves as chairman of the campaign council, with Vice President Kashim Shettima and APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda serving as vice-chairmen.

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma was named secretary, while Yari was appointed Director-General.

Political analysts believe the composition of the council reflects APC’s intention to begin mobilisation early and project unity ahead of the election season.

Observers note that the speed of the opposition’s response highlights concerns about allowing the APC till 2031 narrative to gain traction unchecked.

Political perception can influence voter behaviour, party morale and alliance-building.

If voters and political stakeholders begin to believe that a contest is already decided, opposition parties may face additional hurdles in convincing supporters that victory remains possible.

However, analysts argue that challenging the ruling party’s narrative alone may not be enough.

Opposition parties will also need to present compelling alternatives capable of attracting public support and confidence.

Nigeria’s political history offers examples of parties that once appeared politically invincible but later lost power.

The PDP previously enjoyed years of dominance and once projected confidence about remaining in power for decades before losing the presidency in 2015.

Political analysts say such examples demonstrate that electoral outcomes remain fluid and subject to changing realities.

For this reason, both claims of permanent dominance and predictions of inevitable defeat should be treated cautiously.

Beyond the exchanges between APC and opposition figures, the controversy underscores a broader struggle already shaping the 2027 political landscape.

The debate is no longer only about votes but also about perception, momentum and political influence.

While elections will ultimately determine who governs, parties are already competing to shape public opinion and define the political narrative.

In that sense, the dispute triggered by Yari’s remarks represents an early contest over who controls the conversation ahead of 2027, a battle that has begun long before Nigerians cast their ballots.
