The African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) have confirmed that they have uploaded the details of their presidential candidates and running mates to the INEC nomination portal, marking another major step in preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The confirmations came on Wednesday as political parties continued to meet the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) timetable for candidate nominations ahead of the nationwide polls. Both parties announced the development through separate statements on social media, reaffirming their commitment to completing the nomination process within the electoral commission’s schedule.
ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, disclosed that the party had successfully submitted the names and particulars of its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, through the INEC nomination portal.nIn a post on his X account, Abdullahi described the upload as an important milestone in the party’s electoral preparations.
“We are pleased to announce that we have successfully uploaded the names and particulars of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar (GCON), and our Vice Presidential Candidate, Rotimi Amaechi (CON), to the nomination portal of INEC.”
He added that the development reflected the party’s commitment to presenting what he described as “a credible alternative built on competence, unity, and national renewal.” Meanwhile, NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi also confirmed that he had completed his own nomination process.
In a Facebook post, Obi said filling the nomination form prompted him to reflect on Nigeria’s leadership challenges after encountering a question asking whether an aspirant had ever been declared of unsound mind. He argued that the country’s worsening insecurity, widespread hunger and allegations of public fund diversion deserved greater national attention than political contests.
“When Nigerians, including children and security personnel, are being abducted into the bushes, citizens cannot travel safely on our highways, several million Nigerians are uncertain where their next meal will come from, and several billions are being siphoned frivolously through non-existent agencies and projects, should politics really be our primary preoccupation?”
Obi maintained that effective leadership should mobilise institutions to urgently address these national concerns. He also highlighted another section of the nomination form relating to forged academic certificates, urging INEC to publicly release the educational credentials submitted by all candidates seeking elective office. According to him, greater transparency would strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.
“Transparency strengthens democracy and builds public trust. Nigeria’s problems are too serious for politics as usual. It is time for leadership defined by competence, character, capacity, compassion and commitment to service,” Obi stated.
NDC vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso also announced that his nomination had been successfully uploaded through the INEC nomination portal.
In a statement posted on X, Kwankwaso revealed that the party’s National Leader, Henry Seriake Dickson, visited him in Abuja to review preparations for the 2027 elections. He said he briefed Dickson on consultations held across the North-West, describing the engagements as productive and encouraging. Kwankwaso added that Dickson confirmed the successful submission of his candidacy alongside that of Peter Obi.
“HE Dickson confirmed the successful submission of my candidacy and also announced that my name has been duly uploaded on the INEC portal as the Vice Presidential candidate to His Excellency Peter Obi on the platform of our party.” He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to its campaign, saying members remained united and focused on the task ahead.
The announcements by both the ADC and the NDC underscore the steady progress of political parties in meeting INEC’s nomination timetable. With candidate submissions advancing through the INEC nomination portal, attention is expected to shift toward campaigns and other key milestones ahead of the 2027 general elections.
