2027: Desmond Stephen Leaves NDC, Joins ADP to Contest Okrika Assembly Seat

Okrika-born philanthropist and grassroots politician, Hon. Desmond Stephen, has resigned from the National Democratic Congress, NDC, and joined the Action Democratic Party, ADP.

Stephen, who confirmed the development, is now the ADP candidate for Okrika Constituency in the Rivers State House of Assembly election.

In a resignation letter dated May 25, 2026, the politician thanked the NDC leadership and members for the opportunities and political experience he gained while in the party.

He explained that his decision followed careful consideration and was driven by his desire to serve the people of Okrika with renewed commitment.

The move makes Desmond Stephen ADP candidate ahead of the 2027 election, as political activities intensify across Rivers State.

Stephen said the ADP platform aligns more closely with his vision for the development of Okrika.

According to him, his priorities include improving education, infrastructure and healthcare while expanding economic opportunities for residents.

The politician is known for community outreach initiatives, youth empowerment programmes and advocacy focused on local development.

He said his decision was ultimately motivated by the need to provide effective representation for his constituents.

Speaking with Vanguard on Saturday, Stephen confirmed his resignation and said, “The decision was born out of my desire to give a good representation to my people.”

Stephen’s departure from the NDC has generated reactions across Okrika Constituency.

His supporters have described the move as a bold political decision, particularly as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.

They said his community-focused activities and grassroots engagement could strengthen his campaign for the House of Assembly seat.

Stephen, meanwhile, expressed appreciation to the NDC for the experience gained during his time with the party.

His decision to join the ADP adds another development to the growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

As the election approaches, the focus will now shift to whether Stephen can translate his grassroots support and community profile into electoral backing across Okrika Constituency.
