Kwankwaso resigns NNPP amid major political realignment

Kwankwaso resigns NNPP with immediate effect, citing what he described as “strategic realignment” amid Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.

The former Kano State governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, announced the decision in a statement addressed to party leadership and supporters.

Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who served as the party’s National Leader and presidential flagbearer in the 2023 general elections, described the resignation as a difficult decision.

“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” he said. He added that his departure followed careful consideration of political developments.

Explaining the decision, Kwankwaso said the current national political climate required repositioning.

“Considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation,” he stated.

The former governor noted that his decision was not taken lightly. “As a committed and bonafide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make,” he said, acknowledging his role within the party and the support received since joining the NNPP.

Kwankwaso expressed appreciation to the party’s leadership, specifically thanking National Chairman Ajuji Ahmed and members of the National Working Committee.

“I extend my deepest appreciation to the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed and the entire National Working Committee for their steadfast support throughout my time,” he said.

He also acknowledged other organs of the party, including the Board of Trustees and National Executive Committee, alongside members at various levels.

The former presidential candidate further thanked supporters of the Kwankwasiyya Movement for their loyalty and commitment.

Kwankwaso’s exit marks a significant development within the NNPP, where he had served as the party’s leading national figure since the 2023 election cycle.

His leadership role and presidential candidacy positioned him as a central figure in the party’s national strategy.

The statement did not specify the political platform he intends to join but indicated plans to align with another party.

The move, according to the statement, is aimed at identifying a platform capable of advancing national change and responding to shifting political dynamics.

The Kwankwaso resigns NNPP development comes as political actors begin repositioning ahead of future electoral cycles.

His departure ends his formal association with the party where he served as national leader and presidential flagbearer.

Party officials had yet to issue an immediate response at the time of the announcement. The resignation, however, formally concludes his membership of the NNPP and signals a new political alignment.

The Kwankwaso resigns NNPP decision takes effect immediately, according to the statement.
