The vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has expressed confidence that the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, will honour his commitment to serve only one four-year term if elected in the 2027 presidential election. Kwankwaso said Obi’s public pledge should be trusted, insisting there was no reason for Nigerians to doubt his commitment.

Speaking during an interview on News Central’s 60 Minutes with Mr Kay, Kwankwaso addressed questions surrounding the Obi one-term promise and the coalition’s succession arrangement. According to him, Obi has openly made the commitment before Nigerians and has consistently demonstrated the character of someone who would keep his word.

“I personally believe Peter Obi is a gentleman and I have every reason to trust him, especially that he said it to the hearing of everybody. Nobody should have any reason to doubt him,” Kwankwaso said.

Kwankwaso explained that the agreement within the NDC coalition was founded on mutual trust and a shared understanding among the alliance’s leaders.

He added that allowing the southern region to complete an eight-year tenure aligns with the consensus reached by members of the coalition. According to him, no member of the alliance is expected to abandon an agreement that was openly reached before the Nigerian public.

The former Kano State governor stressed that the coalition’s primary objective extends beyond individual political aspirations. He said the alliance had already developed short-term, medium-term and long-term plans intended to guide governance, regardless of who eventually occupies the presidency. Kwankwaso noted that whether leadership comes from the Obidient movement, the Kwankwasiyya bloc or any other partner within the coalition, the focus remains on implementing the agreed national agenda.

He further stated that the coalition would work to ensure continuity in governance by encouraging future leaders to remain committed to the programme jointly developed by its members. The remarks come as discussions surrounding the Obi one-term promise continue to feature prominently in the political conversation ahead of the 2027 general elections, with coalition leaders insisting that their power-sharing arrangement is built on trust and collective responsibility.
