The African Democratic Congress, ADC, governorship candidate in Osun State, Najeem Salaam, has expressed confidence that voters will support his bid in Saturday’s governorship election. Salaam said his experience in government and grassroots politics positioned him to address political violence and restore peace across the state. He made the remarks during an Arise News Town Hall ahead of the election.
The former lawmaker said Osun residents were increasingly concerned about political violence and would favour a candidate they believed could provide stability. According to Salaam, his party’s record and campaign message have positioned the ADC as a peaceful alternative to the major political contenders.
“Osun people do not want thuggery again because they see us and study as the most peaceful party,” he said.
He added that he believed voters would identify his candidacy with efforts to restore peace in the state.
“The only candidate that can bring peace is Najeem Salam and the only party that can bring peace is the ADC,” he said.
Salaam also alleged that political thuggery and the circulation of weapons remained significant concerns in Osun. He warned that voters should consider the possible consequences of electing candidates whom he believes could contribute to further political tensions.
“Osun people know that if they give it to A or B, they will fight. I can tell you that Osun is filled with thuggery and ammunition. So, we will bring peace,” Salaam said.
His comments came amid heightened political activity in the state as candidates intensified their campaigns ahead of Saturday’s poll.
Beyond security, Salaam said his ambition was to improve the living conditions of residents through better governance and human development. He said an ADC administration would focus on creating a better future for the people while ensuring that public resources were used to serve their interests.
“To build a better today and tomorrow for Osun. I go in to develop Osun in a better way, give people what belongs to them,” he said. Salaam also expressed confidence in his capacity to govern, saying his experience had prepared him for the responsibilities of the office.
“I am more than fit than any other governor,” he added.
The ADC candidate described himself as a reserved politician who prefers research, planning and policy development. He said the proposals contained in his 10-point agenda were based on what he considered practical and achievable measures.
“I am a very reserved person. I conduct research and all that constitute them in my ten-point agenda are doable,” Salaam said.
He explained that the agenda had been documented and would provide a framework for his administration if elected. Salaam added that his previous experience in government had given him an understanding of how public administration works.
The candidate also pointed to his political journey at the local government level as part of his qualification for the governorship. According to him, his years of interacting with communities had helped him understand the challenges confronting residents at the grassroots.
“I started my political career from the local government. I have been looking after people and I know their needs,” he said. Salaam said he would use that experience to serve residents if given the opportunity to lead the state.
“If I have the opportunity, I will serve humanity,” he added.
Salaam said his government, if elected, would make restoring peace a major priority while pursuing human development and improved governance.
His campaign message places security, grassroots engagement and practical policy implementation at the centre of his bid. With the election approaching, Salaam is seeking to persuade Osun voters that his experience and 10-point agenda offer an alternative to the other candidates competing for the state’s top political office.
