Uzodimma palace coup rumours collapse after APC governors rally support

Claims of an alleged Uzodimma palace coup within the Progressive Governors Forum, PGF, collapsed after more than 20 governors reportedly reaffirmed confidence in Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma as chairman of the forum. The development followed reports circulating in Abuja that some governors had allegedly moved to remove Uzodimma from his leadership position within the APC governors’ body.

Governor Hope Uzodimma currently serves as Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, a platform comprising governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC. The forum plays a strategic role in policy coordination and political consultations among APC governors and the Federal Government.

Reports surrounding the alleged Uzodimma palace coup emerged shortly after Uzodimma participated in activities linked to support for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 political cycle. The reports claimed that some governors had met in Abuja and replaced him with Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah.

However, no official communiqué, video evidence, or photographs from the alleged meeting were publicly released at the time the claims circulated.

According to Vanguard, the reports immediately generated political reactions within APC circles as stakeholders questioned the credibility of the alleged leadership change involving the PGF.

The report stated that the Director General of the Progressive Governors Forum, Folorunsho Aluko, was unaware of any meeting purportedly organised to remove Uzodimma as chairman. It also noted that none of the governors reportedly linked to the alleged meeting publicly confirmed participation in such discussions.

Amid the controversy, governors reportedly converged at the Imo State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja, where they passed a vote of confidence on Uzodimma’s leadership of the forum.

Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris, who reportedly moved the confidence motion, stated that there was no division within the Progressive Governors Forum and reaffirmed support for Uzodimma as chairman. Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani was also reported to have supported the position during the meeting.

The alleged Uzodimma palace coup claims also surfaced during a period of heightened political consultations within the APC ahead of the 2027 elections. Political observers noted that internal power dynamics and strategic positioning continue to shape conversations within the ruling party.

Vanguard further reported that governors at the meeting reiterated support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration and ongoing political activities within the party. As discussions around the alleged Uzodimma palace coup continued, analysts pointed to the speed with which governors publicly rallied around the PGF chairman as evidence of continuing support within the forum.

The development highlights ongoing political manoeuvring and internal consultations within the APC ahead of the 2027 elections. Analysts say reports surrounding the alleged Uzodimma palace coup reflect increasing political sensitivity around party leadership structures and influence within major political blocs.

The episode also underscores the importance of cohesion within governors’ forums and party institutions as political activities intensify ahead of future elections.
