Wike Set to Dump PDP for APC Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, is reportedly considering a move to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections, signalling a potential shift in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.

Reports suggest Wike’s possible transfer of political allegiance could occur before the next electoral cycle begins in 2027.

Wike, who was appointed FCT minister in 2023 by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has been at the centre of political speculation since playing a significant role in the ruling party’s success during the 2023 presidential poll, despite remaining a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

His role in the APC-led federal government has heightened interest in his long-term political alignment, with sources suggesting that a formal transition from the PDP to the APC may happen before the 2027 general elections.

The potential move reflects broader trends of political realignment among prominent Nigerian politicians as parties prepare for the next electoral cycle.

Wike’s position has been a subject of controversy within political circles, with critics arguing that his public support for sections of the APC agenda contradicts his formal membership of the PDP.

In reaction to his engagements with the APC-led federal government, the PDP previously criticised his actions as undermining party unity and cohesion ahead of future elections.

However, key clarifications from the Presidency indicate Wike is not currently a member of the APC and cannot legally assume leadership or official roles within the party’s structure, as recognised party leadership remains with Governor Siminalayi Fubara in Rivers State.

The Presidency emphasised that Wike’s role remains that of a federal minister serving the nation rather than representing the APC as a political party member.

Wike’s potential defection to the APC would align with broader political calculations as party leaders and stakeholders position themselves ahead of the 2027 polls.

Analysts note that formal party switches by high-profile figures often precede major elections in Nigeria, reflecting strategic considerations tied to electoral prospects, alliances, and political influence.

As discussions continue, stakeholders across party lines remain watchful of Wike’s political decisions, recognising that any formal shift in allegiance could have implications for party dynamics, electoral alliances, and support bases across key regions in the country.
