Lagos APC Says Electoral Act 2026 Signed in Best Interest of Nigerians

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) said the recently signed Electoral Act 2026 was carried out in the best interest of Nigerians and followed constitutional procedures.

The party’s statement came on Thursday in response to public debate about the Electoral Act’s provisions.

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday signed the Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment) into law at the Presidential Villa in Abuja after the National Assembly passed the bill.

The legislation replaces the 2022 Electoral Act and introduces changes to Nigeria’s electoral framework ahead of the 2027 general elections scheduled for February and March.

The amendment included provisions on electronic transmission of election results while retaining manual backups in the event of technical failure. The changes also adjusted the election notice period.

In a statement on Thursday, Lagos APC spokesman Mr. Seye Oladejo said the party was disappointed by what it described as “orchestrated hysteria” from sections of the opposition following the president’s assent to the Electoral Act 2026.

According to Oladejo, governance is a constitutional duty carried out in the best interest of Nigerians and not a popularity contest. He said the party had observed what it described as misleading narratives regarding so‑called real‑time transmission models in other countries.

Oladejo criticised opposition arguments, saying they ignored Nigeria’s infrastructure disparities and the legal and logistical implications involved in electoral reforms.

He said President Tinubu’s assent followed constitutional procedures, legislative debate, and institutional consultation.

Mr. Oladejo said, “Let it be stated without equivocation: governance is not a popularity contest, nor is it a theatre for digital propaganda. It is a serious constitutional duty carried out in the best interest of the Nigerian people.”

He added, “The people of Nigeria deserve reforms that strengthen institutions, not experiments that may compromise them.”

The statement by the Lagos APC reflects the ruling party’s position on the Electoral Act 2026 amid ongoing national debate.

The Electoral Act’s amendments have drawn responses from different stakeholders, including political parties and civil society organisations as the country prepares for elections in 2027.

The new law provides the legal framework under which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will organise elections, including updated provisions on result transmission and election timetables.
