At least four ministers serving in the cabinet of President Bola Tinubu are preparing to leave their positions as they consider contesting elective offices in the 2027 general elections.
Findings by Saturday PUNCH indicate that the ministers are weighing resignation from the Federal Executive Council in order to pursue political ambitions in their respective states.
The moves are linked to preparations for the 2027 election cycle, when several governors across the country will complete their constitutionally allowed two terms in office.
According to the report, the ministers interested in contesting are targeting governorship positions in their home states.
The upcoming end of tenure for some incumbent governors is expected to create openings in those states ahead of the next election.
Sources within the ruling All Progressives Congress said the ministers considering governorship bids are already consulting political allies and stakeholders in their states.
These consultations are part of early preparations for party primaries and the wider political process leading to the 2027 elections.
The report also noted that Nigerian political officeholders who intend to contest elections are typically expected to resign from appointed positions before participating in party primaries or campaigns.
If the ministers proceed with their plans, their exit would create vacancies in President Tinubu’s cabinet.
Such developments could lead to changes within the Federal Executive Council as the administration continues its tenure while political activities toward the next general election intensify.
