The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has described the recent ruling of the Court of Appeal nullifying the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held in Ibadan in November 2025 as an opportunity for the party to rebuild and reconcile its members.
The appellate court ruled that the party acted wrongly by proceeding with the convention despite a subsisting court order directing compliance with conditions earlier set by the Federal High Court.
Reacting to the judgment in Abuja, Wike said the decision of the court should be seen as a victory for the rule of law and urged members of the party to set aside personal interests and work towards rebuilding the party.
He advised aggrieved members to avoid further litigation and instead pursue reconciliation within the party.
According to him, taking the matter to the Supreme Court could cause additional harm to the PDP, especially with political party primaries expected to take place in April and May.
Wike called on party stakeholders to drop personal ambitions and focus on strengthening the PDP as a major opposition party in the country.
He said the judgment provides an opportunity for members to reunite and find a common path forward.
The minister also noted that the court dismissed several appeals with significant costs, which he said underscored the need for political parties to comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act, relevant laws, and their party constitution.
He added that violations of those legal provisions meant the issue could not be treated solely as an internal party matter, making judicial intervention necessary.
According to Wike, the ruling effectively nullified the Ibadan convention and confirmed that the tenure of the party’s previous officers had expired.
He stated that the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led National Caretaker Committee remains the recognised body managing the affairs of the party to prevent a leadership vacuum.
Wike also said preparations are underway for a fresh national convention scheduled to take place on March 29 and 30 in Abuja.
