Okonkwo Reacts to Obi’s 5bn Defamation Suit Threat, Calls It Unwise

The controversy over the 5bn defamation suit reportedly being prepared by former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi against actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo has escalated, with Okonkwo describing the move as unwise and challenging Obi to proceed with the case.

The dispute follows renewed public disagreements between the two former political allies from the 2023 presidential election campaign.

Okonkwo previously served as spokesperson for Obi’s campaign but has since broken ranks with him on several political matters. The current tension emerged after reports that Obi had issued a legal threat seeking N5 billion in damages over alleged defamatory remarks. The 5bn defamation suit has since generated public attention due to Okonkwo’s response on social media.

In a statement posted on his official X account, Kenneth Okonkwo said he had been made aware of a letter allegedly sent by Obi and his lawyers but had not yet read it.

“It has been brought to my notice that there is a letter circulating online from the hypocrite, Peter Obi, and his Lawyers that I should pay him N5b. Hahaha!” he wrote.

He further alleged that the demand was not appropriate, stating: “If Peter Obi is looking for money to campaign, he should privately ask me for assistance, not come from extortion, and I will help him.” Okonkwo also referenced his role during the 2023 election campaign, claiming he personally funded some of his campaign-related travel while serving as Obi’s spokesperson.

“I did so when I was his Spokesperson paying for my flight tickets and booking for my hotel accommodation to some of our campaigns,” he said. As the 5bn defamation suit matter develops, Okonkwo warned that legal representatives involved should be cautious about potential disclosures if the case proceeds in court.

“Let me sound this note of warning, the Lawyers must take responsibility for any information I may have to divulge,” he stated.

He also criticised the decision to initiate legal action, saying: “Anyone who decides to sue his former Spokesperson for defamation is indeed very unwise.”

The dispute highlights growing tensions between former allies from the 2023 presidential campaign, reflecting ongoing political realignments and strained relationships within opposition politics. The 5bn defamation suit controversy may further deepen divisions and intensify public scrutiny of past political collaborations.

Okonkwo maintained that he would formally respond after reviewing the alleged legal letter, while urging Obi to proceed with the lawsuit. The situation remains unresolved as both figures continue to exchange public statements.
