Akwa Ibom APC Congress Deemed Most Peaceful in Nigeria’s History, Says Akpabio

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has described the All Progressives Congress (APC) congress held in Akwa Ibom State as one of the most peaceful in Nigeria’s history, the party said in a statement on Tuesday.

The APC congress was held in Akwa Ibom State as part of the party’s nationwide schedule of internal elections to elect state and local party executives.

APC congresses across the country have been conducted in recent weeks ahead of the 2027 general elections, with varying reports on conduct and outcomes.

In a statement issued by the party, Akpabio commended members, party stakeholders and delegates who participated in the Akwa Ibom congress for their orderly conduct and adherence to guidelines.

He noted that the exercise was conducted without major disturbances.

The party retained Mr. Stephen Ntukekpo as State Chairman during the congress, according to reports from the exercise.

Officials also announced that members who were previously displaced will continue to receive their entitlements, the statement said.

In the statement, Akpabio said the congress “was conducted in a peaceful atmosphere” and commended party leaders for the success of the exercise.

The description of the Akwa Ibom APC congress as peaceful by the Senate President reflects the party’s assessment of its internal democratic processes as it prepares for broader political contests ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The congresses are part of the mechanisms through which political parties organise leadership at sub-national levels prior to national elections.
