Adamu Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has resigned from his position as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development in Adamawa State, a resignation letter seen by Vanguard shows.
Adamu Atiku served in the Adamawa State executive council as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development.
Commissioners are appointed by state governors to oversee specific ministries and contribute to policy implementation at the state level.
His resignation comes amid political changes in the state following Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a letter dated March 2, 2026, addressed to Governor Fintiri, Adamu Atiku said his resignation was effective on that date, following what he described as “deep personal reflection and careful consideration.”
In the letter, he thanked Governor Fintiri for the opportunity to serve in the state government and described it as an honour to have contributed to the development of Adamawa State.
His resignation followed broader political realignments in the state, including the defection of the governor and other members of the political establishment to the APC.
In his resignation letter, Adamu Atiku wrote, “I write to formally tender my resignation from the office of Honourable Commissioner for Works and Energy Development, Adamawa State, effective from today, 2nd March, 2026.”
He added that serving in the administration was an honour and thanked the governor for the opportunity to contribute to the state’s development.
The resignation of a state commissioner, particularly one who is the son of a former vice president of Nigeria, adds to national political interest in developments in Adamawa State.
The change in personnel occurs within a broader context of political defections and alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
