APC Governors Hold Strategic Meeting With Tinubu in Lagos Ahead of Primaries

Thirty‑one governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and held a strategic meeting in Lagos on Sunday as the ruling party prepares for its governorship primaries scheduled for next month.

The governors gathered to discuss key party matters and the state of the nation ahead of the upcoming electoral cycle.

The gathering began with the governors paying a courtesy visit to President Tinubu at his Ikoyi residence, where they congratulated him on his successful state visit to the United Kingdom, UK, and the Eid‑el‑Fitr celebration.

Following the visit, the governors convened at Eko Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, for a meeting focused on party affairs and preparations for the primaries.

As of about 9:40 p.m. on Sunday, 21 of the 31 serving APC governors had arrived for the meeting, which was earlier scheduled to take place in the afternoon.

Participation from the full complement of governors was ongoing as the meeting proceeded into the evening.

The meeting was presided over by Chief Hope Uzodimma, governor of Imo State and Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF). Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu of Lagos State hosted the session.

A broad cross‑section of governors attended the Lagos meeting, representing states across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. Among those present were:

  • Mai Mala Buni (Yobe)
  • Dapo Abiodun (Ogun)
  • Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta)
  • Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo)
  • Bassey Otu (Cross River)
  • Agbu Kefas (Taraba)
  • AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara)
  • Monday Okpebholo (Edo)
  • Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom)
  • Ahmadu Sule (Nasarawa)
  • Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers)
  • Usman Ododo (Kogi)
  • Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi)
  • Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau)
  • Abba Yusuf (Kano)
  • Umaru Bago (Niger)
  • Peter Mbah (Enugu)
  • Namadi Umar and Dikko Umaru (Katsina)
  • Douye Diri (Bayelsa)

The governors gathered ahead of the scheduled APC governorship primaries, a key stage in the party’s preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Party sources said deliberations included strategies for ensuring a rancour‑free and successful primary exercise across states where governorship candidates are expected to be selected.

The Progressive Governors Forum is a platform through which APC governors coordinate on party strategy, governance priorities and collective responses to national issues.

The forum’s gatherings often serve as avenues for aligning party leadership on forthcoming political contests.

Organisers said the forum would issue a communique at the end of the meeting outlining the outcomes of the discussions.

The communique is expected to address agreed positions on the primaries and other party affairs ahead of broader engagements with the National Working Committee and party stakeholders.
