Peter Obi Visits Kano, Pledges Economic Revival of Industrial Hubs

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has said efforts are underway to revive Kano’s economic strength, particularly its industrial base, during a visit to the state. The remarks were made during the Kwankwassiya Sallah celebration in Kano.

Obi made the statement while addressing a gathering hosted by former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at his residence.

The visit also brought together notable political figures, including Seyi Makinde and Seriake Dickson.

The visit took place during the annual Sallah festivities, providing an opportunity for political leaders and stakeholders to interact with supporters and community members.

The gathering also comes amid increasing political engagements and consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Kano remains a major commercial and industrial centre in northern Nigeria, historically known for its manufacturing hubs, including areas such as Bompai and Sharada industrial layouts.

Addressing the audience, Obi emphasised that his visit was primarily to celebrate the Sallah festival and show respect to Kwankwaso. He, however, outlined a broader vision for economic revitalisation in the state.

“We want to change Kano. We want to build a new Kano… what we want to do is bring back the power of Kano. All those factories in Bompai, Sharada 1, Sharada 2… we want to bring all of them back,” Obi said.

He added that the occasion was not intended as a political event but as part of ongoing engagement with communities and stakeholders in the region.

The visit reflects continued engagement between national political figures and influential leaders in northern Nigeria.

Meetings of this nature often serve as platforms for dialogue on economic development and political cooperation.

Obi’s remarks on industrial revival highlight ongoing discussions about economic diversification, job creation and the restoration of manufacturing capacity in key urban centres such as Kano.
