Ebonyi Group Condemns Opposition Threats, Backs PDP Candidate for 2027

The Association of Ebonyi Indigenes Socio-Cultural in the Diaspora (AEISCID) has condemned what it described as Ebonyi opposition threats by state officials, warning against intimidation of political opponents ahead of the 2027 governorship election. The group also announced its support for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, while calling on President Bola Tinubu to ensure that democratic freedoms are protected.

In a statement issued in Abuja by its President, Ambassador Paschal Oluchukwu, the association criticized remarks allegedly made during a recent political rally in Ebonyi State. AEISCID said democracy guarantees the right of citizens to participate in politics without fear or intimidation and argued that opposition threats should have no place in a democratic society.

The statement followed two major political events in the state: an endorsement rally organized by the Ezza Elders Council in Onueke and a separate press conference by the Umuekumenyi Leaders Council in Abakaliki.

AEISCID expressed concern over Governor Francis Nwifuru’s absence from the Onueke rally, where supporters endorsed him for a second term. According to the group, the governor’s physical presence would have provided an opportunity to directly address issues surrounding political succession and power rotation.

The association also aligned itself with the position of the Umuekumenyi Leaders Council, which endorsed the PDP governorship candidate for the 2027 election. AEISCID commended the council for what it described as courage and foresight in taking that position. The group further alleged that the state had experienced limited development in recent years and questioned the performance of ongoing government projects.

Addressing political succession discussions, AEISCID dismissed claims that power would automatically shift to a particular clan in 2031, urging citizens to focus on political participation rather than expectations of future endorsements.

The association argued that Ebonyi opposition threats and zoning debates should not overshadow the need for competent leadership. It maintained that the next election should be decided by the capacity of candidates to address governance challenges and improve the welfare of residents. The group also urged citizens to remain politically engaged and to exercise their democratic rights freely.

As political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 governorship election, AEISCID has positioned itself firmly behind the PDP candidate while raising concerns over political intimidation. The association insisted that Ebonyi opposition threats must be rejected and that the electoral contest should focus on leadership competence, democratic participation and the future development of the state.
