Rivers ADC Dismisses Rainbow Coalition Influence Ahead of 2027

The Rivers State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has downplayed the political influence of the Rainbow Coalition, rejecting claims that the alliance has become the dominant political force in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections. The party said electoral strength can only be measured through voter support and democratic processes.

The debate follows recent comments by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who described the coalition of political actors in Rivers State as the leading political platform in the state. The alliance, known as the Rainbow Coalition, comprises members drawn from different political parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Labour Party (LP), and the Action Alliance (AA).

Wike has repeatedly argued that the coalition represents the most formidable political structure in Rivers State and has urged politicians seeking elective offices to identify with it ahead of future elections.

Reacting to these claims, the Rivers ADC maintained that no political group can assume electoral victory before voters have spoken through the ballot box. Party officials argued that political relevance is determined by public support rather than declarations made by political leaders.

The ADC’s position came after Wike stated during a political gathering in Port Harcourt that politicians aspiring to positions ranging from local government chairman to governor should align with the coalition. He also expressed confidence that the alliance would play a decisive role in determining political outcomes in the state.

According to Wike, the Rainbow Coalition has agreed to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027 and would collectively decide the state’s governorship candidate for the next electoral cycle. The minister further dismissed the electoral prospects of the ADC in Rivers State, arguing that the party lacked the political structure required to compete effectively in future elections.

The exchange highlights growing political activity ahead of the 2027 elections. Rivers State remains one of Nigeria’s most politically significant states, making alliances, party structures, and voter mobilisation important factors in future contests.

The disagreement between the ADC and supporters of the coalition also reflects broader efforts by political parties to strengthen their positions as preparations for the next election cycle gradually intensify. Political analysts note that while alliances may influence electoral calculations, their effectiveness ultimately depends on public acceptance and voter participation during elections.
